Apple Opens Second Manhattan Store

New York — Apple Computer opened its second company store in Manhattan on May 19.

The 25,000-square-foot facility is located in the underground retail plaza of the General Motors Building at Fifth Ave. and East 59th St., a prime location facing Central Park, the former Plaza Hotel and FAO Schwarz. The site is dominated by a 32-foot glass cube entrance with a spiral staircase that leads to the store below.

Apple marked the grand opening with prizes and T-shirt giveaways. Its first Manhattan outpost is located in SoHo.

Apple currently operates approximately 136 stores nationwide, which reportedly account for about 17 percent of total company revenue. The chain ranked 12th in TWICE’s latest Top 100 Consumer Electronics Retailers report, based on an estimated $2.1 billion in 2005 sales of CE products.
