Cupertino, Calif. – Consumers worldwide
downloaded more than 1.5 billion apps from the Apple App Store in its
first year of existence, the company disclosed.
The
store features more than 65,000 apps available to consumers in 77 countries,
and more than 100,000 developers participate in the iPhone develop program, the
company added. The apps work with the iPod Touch and iPhone, including the new iPhone 3GS. Apple said it
shipped more than 40 million app-running devices since the devices’ launch in
2007.
“With
1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up,”
CEO Steve Jobs contended in a written statement.
