10/17/2011 10:34:18 AM Eastern
Cupertino, Calif. - Consumers purchased more than 4 million iPhone 4S smartphones in their first three days on sale in multiple countries, or more than twice as many previous-generation iPhone 4 models purchased in their first three days of its availability, Apple said.

The iPhone 4S became available Friday, Oct. 14, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the U.K.  It goes on sale Oct. 28 in 22 more countries.

More iPhones 4S models were sold in their first three days than any other phone, claimed Philip Schiller, Apple's worldwide product marketing senior VP.

For its part, Sprint reported on Friday, the first day that it began selling the iPhone 4S and the previous-generation iPhone 4, sales of both models combined exceeded expectations. In addition, the carrier said it enjoyed its best-ever day of sales though its retail, web and telesales channels for "a device family in Sprint history."

"The response to this device by current and new customers has surpassed our expectations and validates our customers' desire for a truly unlimited data pricing plan," said Sprint product chief Fared Adib.

As of 4:30 p.m. Friday, AT&T said it had already activated a record number of iPhones and was on track to double its previous record for iPhone activations in a single day.
