AMD, Systemax Team For 12th Charity Race

12/29/2008 03:05:00 PM Eastern

Las Vegas — AMD and Systemax, owner of TigerDirect.com and CompUSA, will team once again next week for the 12th annual Built Your Own PC Race for Charity, being held here at the Wynn Hotel and Resort on Thursday, Jan. 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Gilbert Fiorentini, chief executive of the Systemax technology products division, said the race has raised more than $2 million for non-profit organizations and schools around the country since its inception.

This year, 30 technology journalists and analysts will participate in the race. Participants will be challenged to be the first to assemble a computer based on the AMD Phenom II X4 quad-core processor.

The top three winners will receive a total of $13,500 in cash to donate to the charities of their choice.

For the first time, AMD will also host “an Overclocking Race, pitting some of the most well known technology journalists against each other to test who can maintain the highest stable frequency on air- and water-cooled PCs,” according to a release. This extra race will take place just before the main race; it will start at 5:45 p.m.

According to the company, all computers used in the Overclocking Race will feature the AMD platform technology codenamed “Dragon,” which will include the new AMD Phenom II X4 quad-core processor.

Other sponsors, including CA, Microsoft, Logitech and PayPal, are expected to be on hand to showcase their latest technology releases during the cocktail reception preceding the race.
