Akimbo To Carry MLB Content

Akimbo Systems, the Internet-based video-on-demand service, said it will add content from Major League Baseball to its service beginning with the baseball playoffs this fall.

Steve Shannon, Akimbo’s sales and marketing VP, said the service will carry condensed versions of key games and MLB highlight clips. The edited game content will be supplied by MLB, which offers similar content for computer subscribers on its Web site, to Akimbo for playback by 6 a.m. the day following the game.

Akimbo also plans to carry programming featuring historical games and action from previous playoff and World Series games.

Shannon said Akimbo will be the first set-top-box-based Internet television service to carry the MLB content.

Subscribers can buy the Akimbo box for $199 and pay $10 per month for a basic programming package that includes content from A&E Network, BBC America, The Biography Channel, Cable News Network, Cartoon Network, TCM and Scripps Networks. MLB content will be available on a pay-per-view basis, and in a tier with pricing to be announced later.
