BASKING RIDGE, N.J. –
The long-delayed 4G LTE
version of the Motorola’s Xoom tablet will be available
Oct. 13 in Verizon Wireless stores, but current
owners of the 3G Xoom can get a free upgrade to
4G.
Current Xoom owners will have to send their tablet
to Motorola for the upgrade, which will take about six
business days. Current users don’t have to change
their data plan.
New purchasers of the 4G Xoom will pay $499
for the device with two-year data contract for 4G/3G
service. The carrier’s
4G network
promises
average download
speeds of
5-12 Mbps and
upload speeds
of 2-5 Mbps in
4G LTE coverage
areas.
The Xoom
features 10.1-
inch widescreen
HD display, 32
GB built-in storage,
microSD
card slot supporting additional 32 GB, Android 3.2
Honeycomb OS, dual-core 1GHz processor, Adobe
Flash10, 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video
chats over cellular and Wi-Fi, and5-megapixel rearfacing
camera with LED flash.
Xoom data plans include $30 monthly access for
2GB, $50 monthly access for 5GB, and $80 monthly
access for 10GB monthly allowance.
When Verizon launched the 3G Xoom in February,
its price with two-year contract was $599. The carrier
also offered it at $799 without contract.
