LG Readies In-Cell Touch Displays For Slimmer Notebook PCs

Seoul, Korea– LG Display plans mass-production in the second half of Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) panels for notebook PCs to make the devices slimmer and lighter.

Panels with AIT technology appear on such smartphones as the LG G4 and iPhones, but the announcement marks the first time the technology is being applied to larger size devices such as notebook PCs, LG said.

LG has already agreed to supply 15.6-inch and 14-inch Full HD AIT panels to several notebook PC brands and is in discussions with companies to supply different panel sizes.

In-cell touch technology embeds a touch sensor within an LCD panel, replacing technologies that place a touch panel on top of the LCD panel, LG said. Compared to a conventional 15.6-inch Full HD touch panel, LG’s technology reduces the panel’s thickness by 1 millimeter (or about 25 percent) and weight by 200 grams (or about 35 percent). The panel is also said to offers a brighter, clearer picture because of a lack of light loss or light reflection.

LG Display is also working on AIT-based panels suitable for use with a touch pen, said by LG to be “particularly essential for consumers using two-in-one PCs that combine tablet and laptop functions.”

LG expects sales of the new panels to be robust because the notebook industry is gearing up for the expansion of touch-embedded products, especially with the second-half launch of the touch-optimized Window 10 OS.

IDC found 10 percent of global notebook PCs in 2014 featured embedded touch functions and expects the percentage to hit 20 percent in 2016 and 30 percent in 2019.

Apple’s 9.7-inch iPad Air2 tablet uses another technology to reduce three layers – cover glass, touch sensor layer, and LCD layer – into one layer, Apple’s web site shows.
