Apple Launches Its Thinnest, Lightest, Brightest MacBook Pro Ever

Twenty-five years after launching its first notebook, Apple introduced what it called its thinnest and lightest MacBook Pro ever.

(Note the Pro in there, as the company launched its thinnest and lightest MacBook earlier this year.)

Two of the three notebooks have replaced the row of function keys on the keyboard with a new thin display called the Touch Bar, which will be interoperable with apps and software. For example, users can show Safari favorites or add editing functionality in Photos.

Two of the MacBooks also come with Touch ID for the first time, allowing users to log in to the computer with their fingerprints.

The MacBooks feature the company’s brightest Retina displays to date, as well a 46 to 50 percent larger Force Touch trackpad (depending on model) and more powerful built-in speakers. The displays have 500 nits of brightness, but new power-saving technologies enable it to consume 30 percent less energy than before, said Apple.

The notebooks boast sixth-generation quad-core i7 and dual-core i5 processors and have up to 2.3 times the graphics performance over the previous generation, it added.

Two display versions are offered: 13- and 15-inch, both with all-metal unibody design. The 13-inch measures 14.9mm thick and weighs 3 pounds, making it 17 percent thinner and a half-pound lighter than the previous version. The 15-inch, meanwhile, measures 15.5mm thick and weighs 4 pounds, so it’s 14 percent thinner and also a half pound lighter.

Both feature SSDs with sequential read speeds over 3GBps and Thunderbolt 3.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,499, with a 2GHz dual-core Intel i5 processor, 8GB of memory and 256GB of flash storage. It ships today.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and Touch ID starts at $1,799. It comes with a 2.9GHz dual-core Intel i5 processor, 8GB of memory and 256GB of flash storage. It ships in two to three weeks.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,399. It comes with the Touch Bar, Touch ID, a 2.6GHz quad-core Intel i7 processor, 16GB of memory and 256GB of flash storage. It also ships in two to three weeks.

Apple also launched a new app for Apple TV. The TV app intends to unify the TV viewing experience across all Apple devices.
