Samsung Enters Built-In Appliance Biz

Samsung Electronics is about to ship its first counter-depth appliances.

The six-piece premium collection, which is set to hit sales floors next month, is comprised of gas, electric and induction cooktops; double- and single-wall ovens; and range hoods.

The series is highlighted by its high-end features, clean lines, stainless and black stainless finishes, and Wi-Fi connectivity. (The range hood and select cooktops are also endowed with Bluetooth, and all products can sync with Samsung’s SmartThings connected-home hub.)

John Herrington, Samsung’s senior VP/general manager of home appliance, said the company is bringing to the built-in line “the same level of innovation and design that we have in our freestanding appliances.”

For the wall ovens, that means:

*steam cooking;

*Samsung’s proprietary Flex Duo feature that divides the 5.1-cubic-foot oven cavity into two sections that can operate at different temperatures;

*interior halogen lighting; and

*signature LED door lights.

The wall ovens are priced to retail from $2,199-$3,999.

Meanwhile, home on the range, the counter-depth cooktops will be available in 30- and 36-inch sizes.

The electric models will feature a powerful 3.3 kW rapid-boil element; a Sync Burner feature that allows simultaneous control of two burners; and 15 different heat settings that include various dual-zone, triple-zone and warming-zone options. The ranges will range from $1,099-$1,499 retail.

The gas models will offer a 22,000 Btu dual power burner — described by Samsung as a first in the U.S. for gas-fueled built-ins — plus easy-grip premium knobs and a removable cast-iron griddle and wok grate. Retails will range from $1,199-$1,699.

The induction models provides a FlexZone feature that automatically adjusts the heat to match pots of varying sizes and shapes; digital touch controls with a new adjustable, magnetic knob; and Samsung’s Virtual Flame technology, which replicates the look of a gas flame. The induction cooktops are priced to hit a price-point range of $2,099-$2,499.

The wall-mount chimney-style 600 CFM range hood features a new dishwasher-safe metal baffle filter, LED lighting and a suggested retail range of $1,099-$1,299. The hoods can sync directly with select cooktops via Bluetooth to automatically start the fans or turn on the overhead lights.

Herrington noted that “2016 has seen over 1.2 million new housing starts and significant growth in home remodeling,” and that the new built-in line “addresses the growing needs of these premium consumers.”
