Is This The Refrigerator Of The Future?

Imagine a refrigerator with no compressor — hell, no moving parts at all, only a solid-state heat pump and natural refrigerant.

Now picture this product being virtually silent; 25 percent more energy efficient than conventional models; more precise with temperature control; and priced at parity with your current appliance aisle line-up.

According to Tony Atti, president, CEO and co-founder of North Carolina start-up Phononic, the imaginary fridge is not only real, but is currently under production by Haier, which is employing his company’s proprietary thermoelectric semiconductor technology.

Appearing on CNBC’s “Mad Money” show with Jim Cramer, Atti said the first such fridges (actually wine coolers) will be available out of China later this year — and that Phononic’s approach to cooling could upend the appliance and consumer electronics industries with impact of transistors on vacuum tubes.
