Electrolux Opens Fridge R&D Center

Anderson, S.C. – Electrolux has opened a $6.3 million research and development center at its refrigerator plant here.

The 43,000-square-foot lab, which is capable of testing 40 refrigerators at once, is part a five-year, $45 million investment to ensure that the fridge factory remains competitive in the global marketplace, the manufacturer said.

“With the addition of this cold technology center, Electrolux is able to not only make our business more competitive, but also continue to grow it,” said Jack Truong, president/CEO of Electrolux Major Appliances North America. “A center like this supports the nearly 1,900 jobs we have at the plant and positions the business to thrive in the future.”

Electrolux said the 24-year-old Anderson plant is the largest producer of top-mount refrigerators in North America. The factory makes 15-, 17- and 18-cubic-foot top mounts, as well as under-the-counter refrigerators and wine coolers, and has shipped more than 25 million products in total.

The company, whose Frigidaire brand helped spawn the term “fridge,” is also committing about $100,000 over five years to the creation and support of an advanced placement (AP) science class at the local Crescent High School.

Truong was joined at the R&D center’s ribbon cutting ceremony last week by South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Brian White, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Noted Truong, “Leading the way in the appliance industry through design and innovation is how we build value for consumers.”
