Sony Adds 30x Cyber-Shot, Video Binoculars

San Diego — Sony introduced Wednesday the Cyber-shot HX50 compact point-and-shoot camera featuring a 30x optical zoom range and advanced 20.4-megapixel Exmor R CMOS image sensor.

The company also unveiled the second-generation 2D/3D binocular-camcorder combination product in model DEV-50V/B ($2,000 suggested retail). The product offers a 1/3.91-inch back-illuminated Exmore R CMOS sensor, 2x XGA 3D and 2D resolution OLED Tru-finder, a Bionz image processor, two-channel Dolby Digital sound recording with built-in stereo mic, 20.4-megapixel still image resolution, MPEG-4, AVCHD 2.0 and H.264 video recording in up to FullHD 1080/60p/60i resolution and 1080/60i in 3D.

The video binoculars also offer Optical SteadyShot, G lenses, and are 30 percent lighter than the original model. They are also splash and dust resistant.

Sony said users can select the variable zoom to sweep their surroundings at low magnification before zooming in seamlessly to pinpoint a subject, such as deer in a field.

The DEV-50V/B’s XGA OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinders have improved resolution and contrast for left and right eyes, resulting in a highly immersive viewing experience. In low light situations, paired with an Exmor R CMOS sensor, the electronic viewfinder brightness is boosted by a newly developed Hyper Gain function.

This electronically increases brightness in the viewfinders so subjects can be quickly located and framed in dim conditions, Sony said.

Meanwhile, the Cyber-shot HX50, which ships in May at a $450 suggested retail, measures 4.4 inches by 2.6 inches by 1.2 inches by 1 inch and weighs 9.6 ounces.

Sony is calling the camera “the world’s smallest and lightest camera with 30x optical zoom.”

“Despite the emergence of smartphone cameras in today’s market, the HX50V model gives photographers plenty of reason to invest in a dedicated pocket camera,” said Patrick Huang, Sony Electronics Cyber-shot digital camera business director.  “Its wide-ranging 30x optical zoom gives users more freedom to pick their shooting subject and position, and its extensive, advanced imaging capabilities give shooters the peace of mind that image quality will never be compromised — every scene will be given the color, detail and clarity that it deserves.”

Other key features in the HX50V include built-in Wi-Fi connectivity/transfer with links with iOS and Android mobile devices via Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile application, enhanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, a new Bionz processor and high-speed autofocus.

The Wi-Fi and PlayMemories app allows a connected device to be used as a wireless remote to control the camera.

Advanced users have the option of using an exposure compensation dial with P/A/S/M functions for manual shooting adjustments.

There is also a five-blade aperture for a smooth background defocusing effect and a Multi Interface Shoe for attaching compatible accessories, including an electronic viewfinder, flash or microphone. In addition. the unit features a Multi Terminal for using a compatible remote control.

The camera’s X-type lithium-ion battery is compact and delivers 400 photos per charge.

The camera will record video in FullHD (60p) movies that can be shot using the Optical SteadyShot Active mode for reduced shake and image blur.

The HX50V also adds Triluminous Color technology, providing an expanded range colors.

Creative modes are offered for stills, panoramas and movies, including such artistic treatments as Pop Color, Partial Color, Soft High-Key and more.
