Melville, N.Y. – Nikon introduced Tuesday three additional Coolpix compact point-and-shoot cameras, including the company’s first model to incorporate a DX format (APS-C) CMOS sensor.
The models include the Coolpix A DX format super telephoto with a $1,100 suggested retail, the Coolpix P330 compact bridge style camera at a suggested $330, and the S3500 at $140. All three ship in March.
With its unusually large 16.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and Expeed 2 image-processing engine, the Coolpix A offers what Nikon said is the “rendering capabilities of a digital-SLR camera with the portability of a compact digital camera.”
The camera includes a seven-blade iris diaphragm, offering natural blurred background features, while reducing various types of aberrations at all aperture settings. Nikon said the cameras include wide-angle lenses using optics that maximize performance from a compact package.
The Coolpix A includes a 26x optical zoom starting at 28mm/f2.8 to a super-telephoto 585mm (35mm format equivalent). A lens-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) system keeps distant images and close-ups sharp. It also incorporates an Easy Auto mode.
The camera includes up to 4 fps high-speed continuous shooting.
The Coolpix A will be offered in a choice of black and silver body colors, and Nikon will also make available in March three accessory items for the camera: the DF-CP1 ($450 suggested retail) optical viewfinder, the UR-E24 adapter ring and HN-CP18 lens hood. The latter two will be sold together for $130.
The Coolpix S3500 is Nikon’s newest S-series addition that supports simple capture capability, a 20.1-megapixel sensor, a 7x optical zoom and lens-shift Vibration Reduction technology.
The S3500 has a slim, compact design, and a wide-angle 7x optical zoom. In-camera image editing functions include: glamour retouch and quick effects.
It will ship in a choice of silver, red, purple, orange and pink body colors.
For its D-SLR camera line, Nikon also introduced this week the AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR (shipping in April at a $2,700 suggested retail) lens, suitable for up to FX-format cameras. The lens feature’s Nikon’s Nano Crystal coating, Silent Wave AF motor, and 20 elements in 12 groups including Super ED Glass Element and four ED glass elements.
