Canon Adds Pro 50-1000mm 4K Zoom Lens

Melville, N.Y. – Canon U.S.A. continued to do its part for the creation of Ultra HD 4K video content by introducing Thursday a Cine-Servo 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens, optimized for ENG and cinematography cameras using single chip large-format 4K sensors.

The lens was said to have the world’s longest focal length (75-1500mm with its built-in 1.5x extender) and highest (20x) magnification among Super 35mm zoom lenses, and is ideal for sports and nature documentary work, among other uses.

Canon said the Cine-Servo zoom lens will shoot scenes in HD, 2K and 4K on single-sensor cameras, and features a removable Digital Drive unit to accommodate either broadcast or cinema-style production, using traditional electronic field production operation. Included on the lens are a zoom/rocker switch, programmable zoom and focus settings, and data connections for use with broadcast-type field/studio servo-demand controls for zoom and focus.

Removal of the drive unit enables Cinema-style operation supported by clearly engraved barrel markings, an 11-blade iris for smooth “bokeh,” and compatibility with lens-support rods, matte boxes, and other cinema accessories.

Available in either EF- or PL-mounts, the new 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 ultra-telephoto zoom lens has a compact form factor of 15.9 inches in length (PL version) and weighs 14.6 pounds.

The lens is said to offer “outstanding aberration correction and high image quality extending from the center of the image to all edges.”

Professionals will be able to use the lens for close-up 4K imaging of wildlife subjects or athletes while maintaining the physical distances necessary in such shooting situations.

The lens will ship in the first quarter of 2015 at $78,000.
