AT&T Readies 6 More Smartphones, HSPA+ Camera

Dallas — AT&T will ship six more smartphones for the Christmas selling season, including two Windows Phone 8 smartphones from Nokia, one Windows Phone 8 smartphone from HTC, two HTC Android phones and an LG Android phone.

The carrier also announced plans for a 4G HSPA+ equipped Samsung digital camera.

The introductions follow announcements of plans for three other Android smartphones — the Samsung Galaxy Express, Samsung Rugby Pro and Sony Xperia TL — and the LTE-equipped 10.1-inch Galaxy tablet for sale in the coming weeks.

All of the products feature 4G LTE, and two — the Android 4.1 OneX+ from HTC and the LG Optimus G — are among the first LTE smartphones with quad-core CPUs. The HTC model features 1.7GHz CPU and the LG phone features 1.5GHz CPU.

Pricing and specific availability dates haven’t been announced for any of the phones as of this posting.

Here’s the rundown on each phone:

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820: Both are Windows Phone 8 devices, available in November, with the step-up 920 available exclusively through AT&T. The 920 will come in five colors: red, white, black, yellow and cyan. The Nokia Lumia 820 will come in black.

The step-up Lumia 920 features a 4.5-inch 5-inch Nokia PureMotion HD+ WXGA IPS LCD screen, with Super Sensitive touch, Nokia ClearBlack with high brightness mode, and sunlight readability enhancements. The 920 runs Window Phone 8 on a 1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 processor and features a 2,000 mAh battery with integrated inductive wireless charging capability using the Qi wireless charging standard. It ships with 1GB RAM and 32GB of storage memory and adds 7GB of free Cloud storage to Nokia’s SkyDrive Cloud service.

The 920’s main rear-facing 8.7-megapixel camera uses the latest advances in Nokia PureView imaging technology. Using advanced floating lens technology, the camera is able to take in five times more light than competing smartphones without using flash, Nokia said, and adds image stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics. Full 1080p HD video is captured at 30 fps.

The phone adds a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera that records 720p video.

The Lumia 920 also comes with Nokia City Lens, the latest addition to Nokia’s location suite. When pointing the camera at a city street, City Lens overlays information about restaurants, shops, hotels and other information on the surfaces of buildings.

The Lumia 820 features a 4.3-inch ClearBlack WVGA 800 by 480 OLED screen, also with Super Sensitive touch, ClearBlack and sunlight readability, and the same Snapdragon S4 processor and 1GB of RAM. Storage memory is 8GB with the included MicroSD card and 7GB of free SkyDrive storage.

The 820 has the same unibody look and feel as the Lumia 920, but adds an optional exchangeable shell design in seven color options. The 1,650 mAh battery does not integrate the Qi wireless charging standard but the exchangeable shells add that capability to the phone. Beneath the shell there is room to insert a MicroSD memory card.

The 820 has an 8-megapixel auto-focus, rear-facing camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash. It also captures 1080p HD video at 30 fps. It adds a VGA front-facing camera.

LG Optimus G: The Android 4.0 (Ice Cream sandwich) phone features quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 4.7-inch 15:9 WXGA True HD IPSPlus display with 1,280 by 768 pixels, 32GB of memory, 2GB RAM, either 13- or 8-megapixel rear camera, nearfield communications (NFC), Mobile High-definition Link (MHL) output, Wi-Fi and DLNA certification.

The Optimus G also features cross-tasking, described as a multitasking upgrade that lets users complete complex tasks simultaneously without having to compromise other tasks. Cross-tasking, called Q Slide, displays two applications simultaneously on one screen. Because the entire screen of each app is displayed, a user can complete two tasks concurrently, such as sending a text message while watching a video, the company said.

The Optimus G delivers longer battery life, a thinner profile and a brighter display compared with previous LG models.

HTC One X+ and HTC One VX: The HTC One X+ will be one of the first AT&T smartphones to combine Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and a quad-core processor. It will also be the first smartphone in the U.S. to feature HTC Sense 4+.

Features include 1.7GHz Tegra 3 Nvidia quad-core processor with battery-saving fifth core, using one core for everyday use and revving up into quad-core mode for video, gaming, and other demanding apps Compared to the original HTC One X, the One X offers faster CPU, longer battery life and more internal storage at 64GB.

HTC One X+ comes with has a 4.7-inch 720p HD screen, 8-megapixel rear-facing HD camera of the HTC One X’s high-performance camera features, the company said.

The HTC One VX is positioned as an affordable Android smartphone and features one of the slimmest unibody form factors in the industry at just 9.19 millimeters thin. The 4.5-inch display is laminated with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass to improve durability and reduce light reflection.  A 5-megapixel camera, which goes from lock screen to shooting photos in less than a second, offers continuous shooting at 4 fps. It captures still images from a video.

HTC Windows Phone 8X:  Arriving in November, the Windows Phone 8 smartphone features built-in Beats Audio technology, 4.3-inch 1,280 by 720 HD display with 341 pixels per inch, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera,  Qualcomm S4 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, Micro SIM card, 16GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, NFC, and the same camera module and imaging chip as the flagship Android-based One X. Rear-camera features include 8-megapixel image capture, 1080p video recording, f/2.0 aperture and 28mm lens.

The front-facing 2.1-megapixel camera features 1080p video capture, f/2.0 aperture, and an “ultra-wide-angle lens” that lets users capture themselves and their friends in self-portrait group shots. The 8X also features Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n with dual-band N. It comes with dedicated camera button.

Samsung Galaxy Camera: The Samsung Galaxy Camera features Android 4.1, AT&T 4G service and downloading of apps from the Google Play market.

Designed for sharing pictures quickly without connecting to a laptop or PC, the camera features a 4.8-inch HD Super Clear LCD screen, a 21x optical zoom lens, and bright 16-megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor for shooting high-quality images close up and in low-light conditions.

The device is equipped with quad-core 1GHz processor and such features as Smart Pro Mode technology, which lets users toggle through a series of preset options to simplify the processes for taking professional-level images.

With the camera, users can post instantly to social-networking sites or send pictures directly to another device. It’s optimized to send photos and videos to a range of Galaxy devices.

It goes on sale in the coming weeks.
