Bentonville, Ark. — Hewlett-Packard recently unveiled a version of its HP Pavilion DV6929 that comes with 97 percent less packaging, available now exclusively through Walmart and Sam’s Club for $798.
A special version of HP’s Pavilion dv6929 now available exclusively through Walmart and Sam’s Club comes packaged in an HP Protect messenger bag, eliminating the use of 97 percent of traditional packaging materials.
The company said it redesigned the packaging of the product by replacing conventional protective shipping materials and boxes with a messenger bag, made with fabric from 100 percent recycled materials. The company said the move dramatically reduced the overall packaging content and size while delivering equal, if not better, product protection when compared to conventional packaging.
The packaging design won Walmart’s Home Entertainment Design Challenge, a contest that was open to all suppliers of CE products. It encouraged contestants to provide a design that would attract customers, would reduce the environmental impact for its product category and would feature packaging that “facilitates reuse and recycling, reduces waste, and reduces or eliminates the use of toxic materials.”
According to HP, its design, in addition to reducing packaging materials, allows for the conservation of fuel and the reduction of CO2 emissions by removing one out of every four trucks previously needed to deliver the notebooks to Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations around the country.
