Is It A Dog Or The Delivery Man? Nest Cams Will Know

Nest Labs stepped into the great wide open with its newest security cam, the Nest Cam Outdoor.

The Nest Cam Outdoor is essentially the Nest Cam (now called the Nest Cam Indoor) but with a weatherproof housing and a magnetic mounting base. It can record 1080p video via 130-degree wide-angle lens, while night vision is illuminated via eight IR LEDs. Consumers can view video, control the camera, and activate two-way audio using the Nest smartphone app.

The camera is slated for fall availability at a $199 suggested retail (same as the Indoor).

The company also launched a new alert for its Nest Aware Cloud storage subscription service. Person alerts, launching in September, will be able to distinguish people from other moving objects, such as dogs or cars, said Nest. It will be available for all Nest and Dropcam products.

Finally, Nest updated its app with a new user interface meant for easier camera control. A new Spaces feature organizes Nest cameras by room, while the camera feed view has been expanded to full-screen. Those connected via Wi-Fi can also view live streams.

Other new app features include automatic bandwidth adjustment; the ability to create and share password-protected live streams; Apple Watch and Android Wear support; and 1080p viewing for Dropcam Pro users. Updates will be rolled out later this month.
