Home Automation Extends Its Reach

New York – Home automation extended its reach with announcements by appliance maker Miele, Bosch Security Systems and DIY home-automation supplier Insteon.

Miele developed a proof-of-concept demonstration of an oven connected to Microsoft Azure’s Internet of Things (IoT) services, enabling consumers to program ovens to ensure meals come out “perfectly cooked,” Miele said.

Miele lets users browse recipes on Miele’s website and choose from various meals. Once a recipe is selected, food-preparation stages are downloaded to the user’s smartphone or tablet, and the matching program is loaded onto the oven through Azure. The oven is programmed to cook the specific meal using the proper operating mode, temperature, cooking time, humidity and other factors, the company said at the Hannover Messe event in Berlin.

For its part, home- and commercial-security Bosch went to ISC West in Las Vegas to enter the home-automation market with a Z-Wave Home Control Gateway, which lets allows monitored-security integrators to connect Bosch’s G-series and B-series security control panels with a variety of Z-Wave wireless devices. The devices include lighting controls, door locks, temperature sensors, IP cameras and more.

“End users want systems that are easier to use, seamlessly integrated and accessible from mobile devices,” said Brian Wiser, Bosch Security Systems president of sales. “Integrators need technology that gives them a competitive edge through more functionality and lower installation costs, which helps them to generate additional revenue streams. The answer to both demands is connected security systems, and Bosch continues to release new offerings to meet this growing need.”

At Insteon, the company has expanded its retail distribution to Micro Center’s online and brick-and-mortar stores and to Meijer brick-and-mortar stores.

The company’s distribution list also includes the online and brick-and-mortar stores of AAFES, B&H Photo, Best Buy, BJ’s Warehouse, Costco, The Home Depot, Marine Corps Exchanges, Menards, Microsoft, Millennium, Navy exchanges, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Sears, The Source, TigerDirect and Walmart.

Insteon is also available in the brick-and-mortar stores of Best Buy Canada, Costco Mexico, Lowes Mexico, Mcliney Lumber, Sam’s Club Mexico and Verizon Wireless. Online, Insteon is in Crutchfield, Newegg, Target, Staples and Kohl’s.
