Cree Gets Bright Idea

Durham, S.C. – Cree turned the spotlight on its first connected LED lightbulb for the consumer market.

The new $14.97 60-watt Connected Cree LED Bulb is compatible with the Wink home-automation hub and ZigBee-certified hubs. The bulb will be available later this month through Home Depot’s online store and be available in-store in February.

The bulb will also be compatible with future Cree-supported hubs and the Apple HomeKit platform, the company said.

From an Apple or Android phone app, the Connected Cree LED Bulb can be turned on and off, dimmed and brightened. One or more lights can be scheduled to turn on and off while homeowners are away.

The bulb is said to emit a warm, omnidirectional light through a shatter-proof housing. It delivers 815 lumens in a soft white (2700K) color temperature. It consumes 11 watts of power at full brightness, or 81 percent less energy than an equivalent incandescent bulb. Its rated lifetime is 25,000 hours of use.

Wink’s hub incorporates multiple wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, Z-Wave Plus, ZigBee, Lutron’s Clear Connect, and 433MHz RF. The hub controls more than 100 devices from multiple brands.

Wink is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GE-backed Quirky. Wink launched its hub last July through Home Depot and Amazon.
