Bang & Olufsen Takes To Cloud To Integrate Home Systems

Bang & Olufsen is going to Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) to offer custom installers more ways to integrate its audio and video products into home automation systems and third-party electronics.

The company said it is among the first audio-video companies to offer an IFTTT-enabled channel through its open, Cloud-based BeoLink SmartHome solution.  IFTTT (If This Then That) lets users create chains of simple conditional commands“for programming their homes and combining products and services that are not at the outset directly connected to one another,” said Brian Bjørn Hansen, head of Bang & Olufsen System Solutions.

BeoLink SmartHome settings are changed and controlled using the Bang & Olufsen BeoRemote or the company’s BeoLink App.

IFTTT is a Cloud-based path to interoperability among products that don’t share home-automation standards.

Last year at ISE, B&O tightened the integration of its audio and video products with major home-control systems by adding direct IP control and announcing B&O-supported drivers to enable two-way communication with and control from major-brand home-automation systems.  The development meant B&O’s Gateway was no longer needed for third-party two-way status and control, and it made programming simpler, a spokesperson said at the time.

In the latest development, the BeoLink SmartHome solution becomes a new option to let installers connect Bang & Olufsen products with all other technology products in the home and offer full integration with some of the largest home integrators, including Crestron, Control4 and Savant, the company said.

“BeoLink SmartHome allows the user to control lights, curtains, room temperature, alarm systems and other everyday home-based technologies in the simple and intuitive way that Bang & Olufsen has become known for,” said president/CEO Tue Mantoni.  The solution includes such products as Nest thermostats and smoke detectors and Amazon Echo, which enables voice-controlled commands.

With the service, a smart home could be programmed to turn on the bedroom lights at sunrise and start playing music from a pre-defined playlist on B&) audio gear.

To set up and configure a BeoLink SmartHome installation, B&O offers a graphic interface and a real-time configuration tool pre-installed with hundreds of drivers to take the coding out of home-automation programming, the company said.  “What normally takes days now takes hours and is far easier than any other system to set up, modify and update,” the company claimed.

Cloud services “allow custom installers extreme flexibility when upgrading or servicing existing setups from a remote location,” the company added. “Customers will get new features or services quickly and without hassle.”

BeoLink SmartHome service requires the installation of a BeoLink Gateway in a house.
