West Caldwell, N.J. - New Jersey dealer Electronics Expo is
enhancing its business with new departments and services.
The seven-store A/V specialty chain, based here, has added its
first food franchise, is expanding its digital imaging assortment, is preparing
to relocate two stores to a smaller, more cost-efficient footprint, and is
planning a move into 12-volt sales and installation.
The new restaurant, Big Apple Bagel Shop, is a Starbucks-like
franchise that president/CEO Leon Temiz opened adjacent to his Wayne, N.J.,
store to help draw traffic. The shop features indoor and outdoor seating and
direct access to the showroom, where dining tables are equipped with
Wi-Fi-enabled tablets. Depending on the results Temiz may add restaurants to
other store locations, he told TWICE.
The company is also upgrading and expanding its digital imaging
departments with better DSLRs, premium lenses and a wider range of accessories,
including grips, bags and flashes.
"The point-and-shoot business is down but sales of SLRs are up,
so we're shifting our selection toward a higher-end customer," he said.
Temiz also plans to move two stores to smaller locations later this
year. The new format -- 7,000 to 8,000 square feet compared with the company's
typical 16,500-square-foot footprint -- will still accommodate the chain's
in-store vignettes, central connectivity
and about 80 percent of its most productive SKUs.
The smaller stores will save money on rent, staffing, inventory
and displays without sacrificing the most popular products and services, he
said, and additional stores may be relocated as leases expire and real estate
Also on tap is an entry this summer into aftermarket car CE and
installation. Temiz said he has commitments from the leading 12-volt
manufacturers, and is also leveraging his membership in the Progressive
Retailers Organization (PRO Group) buying group, whose fellow members include such
car A/V specialists as Car Toys and Crutchfield.
Temiz said he is trying to evolve his business ahead of a quickly
shifting marketplace. "We're making a lot of changes before the stuff hits the
fan," he said.
