Amazon Waterproof Kindle Oasis Is Primed For Poolside

Marks 10 years since the company launched its first e-reader 10/11/2017 11:00:00 AM Eastern

Amazon’s newest top-of-the-line Kindle Oasis is waterproof, a first for the company.

The updated e-reader features a 7-inch 300 ppi Paperwhite display, the largest display of currently available Kindles, and a redesigned form factor said to fit 30 percent more words than its predecessor. It comes in 8GB ($249) and 32GB ($279) storage options; models without the “Special Offers” advertisements on the lock screens tack on an extra $20 to the price tag.

A 32GB model with built-in 3G cellular connectivity is also available for $349.

Other new features for the Oasis include built-in Audible access, Bluetooth, an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the front light, faster page-turn times, additional font sizes, an aluminum back, and an IPX8 waterproof rating for immersion in up to 6.6 feet of water for up to an hour.

Readers can also now choose to display white text on a black screen, as well as change the settings to read left-aligned text.

A magnetic cover that wakes the device when opened and can double as a stand will be sold separately for $44.99 to $59.99. Amazon told TWICE it will not include the charging cover that came standard with the first Oasis.

The time to reach a full charge is now two hours, down from the three hours of the first version.

Audible will be made available via an over-the-air update to the eighth-generation Kindle and the original Kindle Oasis in the next few months. The new font sizes and ragged-right alignment will be made available to the sixth-gen Paperwhite and 2013 and later Kindle devices.

Other Kindle e-readers still offered by Amazon include the $79.99 Kindle, $119 Kindle Paperwhite and $199 Kindle Voyage.
