Almo Turns 70

Happy Birthday Almo.

The national electronics and appliance distributor turned 70 this month, and the company is marking the milestone with a series of celebratory events running now through summer.

First up was the official 70th Anniversary Kick-Off, held earlier this month at Almo headquarters in Philadelphia. Chairman/owner Gene Chaiken and wife Roz cut a commemorative cake, and City Councilman Brian O’Neill presented the company with a citation honoring Almo’s commitment to the city.

That commitment will continue this May and November when the distributor sponsors the planting of 70 trees across Philadelphia as part of the city’s Love Your Park initiative.

Almo will then take the anniversary celebration on the road this summer with employee appreciation events slated at each of its 10 regional outposts, in Long Island, N.Y.; Baltimore; Columbus, Ohio; Atlanta; Tampa, Fla.; Dallas; Milwaukee, Wis.; St. Louis; and Reno, Nev., where staffers will mark the occasion with “food, fun and commemorative gifts,” the company said.

Almo was founded in 1946 from a lone storefront. Chaiken joined the company in 1963, when it was still run by his father-in-law, and assumed the top job ten years later. As he quipped during the headquarters Kick-Off, “The only reason you’re all here today is because on July 4th, 1959, Roz said yes to going out with me.”

During his tenure Chaiken grew and diversified the operation into a billion-dollar family business, which today has over 450 employees, 2.2 million square feet of warehouse space, and provides over 100 tech and appliance brands to retailers across the country.

Chaiken was succeeded as CEO in 2014 by the couple’s son Warren, who continues to enter new product categories and markets.
