El Segundo, Calif.
- DirecTV revealed this week that it has released an app for Android devices
that will allow on-the-go streaming of certain video content. The service joins
the iOS app version released last month.
Availability of
the updated free app means that Android device owners who subscribe to the
satellite TV provider's core direct-to-home service can now take their devices
on the road and view television shows and movies wherever they can get Wi-Fi or
cell service.
The streaming content made available to mobile
smartphones and tablets will be accessible through the app's Watch on Phone
function.
Exactly how much
of DirecTV's content that is available through the device, however, will be
determined by the type of
DirecTV
package that viewer subscribes to at home, and whether or not the channel
provider has authorized its content be made available for streaming.
Among the premium
channels available through the app are HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Encore.
Android devices
with the app will be able to stream content over both Wi-Fi and cellular
networks.
The application includes
a discovery tool that allows users to see top shows and movies being discussed
by other users.
