San Diego — Sony has launched what it’s touting as the world’s smallest 30x optical zoom cameras.
The HX90V and WX500 feature 18-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensors, 30x optical zoom Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lenses, Bionz X processors and optical SteadyShot with five-axis stabilization.
Sony said it was able to achieve miniaturization in part by making the lens barrel smaller, as well as using a new type of glass.
Both cameras also have 921k-dot LCD screens that tilt 180 degrees; Wi-Fi and NFC compatibility; the ability to record FullHD video at XAVC S format at 50Mbps, which Sony said makes them suitable for professional broadcasting; and a built-in “pop up” flash for low-light shooting support.
The HX90V adds the same retractable OLED electronic viewfinder found on the company’s RX100 III model, although it’s now half the size. The HX90V also features adjustable dials and functions, a customizable control ring, and GPS functionality for automatic photo and video tagging.
The HX90V will have a $430 suggested retail, while the WX500 will be $330. Both will be available in June.
Sony has announced new accessories for its Cyber-shot line: the LCJ-HWA body case and the ECM-CG60 shotgun microphone. The case, which is compatible with the new cameras, has a black leather-style finish. The CG60 mic attaches to the multi-interface shoe on Sony’s RX camera line, meant to enhance audio recording during movie shooting.
