New Sony Flagship Alpha 9 Mirrorless Camera Takes On Rival Pro DSLRs

Sony’s debut of its new flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, the Alpha 9 (A9), put an emphasis on the camera’s speed and performance advantages.

The new A9 will be marketed to professional photographers and competes head-to-head with Canon and Nikon’s flagship pro DSLR models.

Sony claimed the A9’s 35mm full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor is “the world’s first of its kind” and delivers 24.2-megapixel still images and a new standard for continuous shooting capabilities for sports and action photography  — “black-out free” shooting at 20 frames per second for up to 241 consecutive RAW file format shots (or 362 JPEGs).

The camera delivers 693 autofocus points covering up to 93 percent of the viewing frame. It features five-axis in-body stabilization, dual SD card slots, an Ethernet port and 4K video capture.

Sony said the A9 uses Sony’s sharpest electronic viewfinder ever, a Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder with approximately 3,686k dots. The camera’s maximum shutter speed is 1/32,000 of a second, and Sony noted the camera is capable of calculating autofocus and auto exposure at up to 60 times per second. It adds a focus joystick on the back to help users better pinpoint the subject.

Sony also added the most robust camera battery it has ever used, doubling the capacity of previous Sony full-frame cameras.

It hits retail in May with a $4,500 suggested retail.
