Canon Unveils Super-Zoom PowerShots

Melville, N.Y. – Canon U.S.A. introduced Tuesday two compact, super-zoom PowerShot cameras including the 42x optical zoom PowerShot SX520 HS and the 30x optical zoom PowerShot SX400 IS.

Both cameras were designed to give photographers long, flexible telephoto reach to capture subjects from far distances.

The Canon PowerShot SX520 HS ($400 suggested retail, shipping in September) has an optical zoom length equivalent of 24-1008mm on a 35mm camera. Canon’s HS system allows clear sharp images and FullHD Video.

The PowerShot SX400 ($250, shipping in August), has an optical 35mm focal length equivalent of 24-720mm and employs Canon’s Intelligent Image Stabilization (IS) system.

Both cameras fit into the super telephoto segment that remains one of the few pockets of growth in the point-and-shoot camera field.

Other features on the PowerShot SX520 HS include Canon’s Optical Image Stabilization system to keep images stable at long focal lengths, a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, and Canon’s DIGIC 4+ image processor used in the aforementioned HS System. One of the key benefits is said to be strong low-light performance.

The camera records video in FullHD 1080p video resolution The IS system chooses from one of eight modes to adjust for camera shake when shooting videos.

The camera also offers a high-speed autofocusing (AF) system and includes an advanced Zoom Framing Assist feature that helps locate the main subject in the frame by zooming out, and then zooming back in quickly and automatically for dramatic close-ups with face detection where applicable.

The PowerShot SX400 IS features a 16-megapixel CCD sensor, DIGIC 4+ image processor, Smart Auto system, 720p HD video capture with a dedicated movie button, and an upgraded high-speed AF.
