Canon Brings Camera Bounty To Photokina

Melville, N.Y. – On the eve of Photokina in Cologne this week, Canon introduced a new addition to its EOS DSLR line and three PowerShot point-and-shoots.

The new cameras include the EOS 7D Mark II, a new top-end consumer DSLR; PowerShot G7 X high-performance point-and-shoot; PowerShot SX60HS; and PowerShot N2.

Canon also revealed the addition of three new lenses: the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM; EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM; and EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM.

The EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM and EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM will ship in November at suggested retails of $6,899 and $149, respectively. The EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM will ship in December at $599.

The EOS 7D Mark II will ship in November at a $1,799 suggested retail for the body only, and $2,149 for a kit including an 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.

It features a 20.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, dual DIGIC 6 processors, dual pixel CMOS AF, 65 AF points all cross-type, dual cross on the center point, and offers dual card slots for Compact Flash (UDMA mode 7) and SD (UHS-I).

Other features include built-in GPS functionality; built-in flash; non-touch LCD monitor; Intervalometer; 10 fps burst shooting; ISO 100 to 16,000; ISO boost mode to 25,600 and 51,200; 1080p/720p both get 60 fps; and servo AF for video shooting.

An anti-flicker mode eliminates flickering under fluorescent lamps, and mic and headphone connectors.

Among the new PowerShot cameras, the Canon G7 X (shipping in October at $700) is the highlight, featuring a 20-megapixel 1-inch CMOS  format sensor, 24-100mm equivalent f/1.8-2.8 lens, optical image stabilization, five-axis shake reduction for video capture, DIGIC 6 image processor, 31-point AF, 1.04-million-dot touchscreen tilting LCD, pop-up flash, exposure compensation dial, control ring for shooting mode, built-in ND filter, 1080/60p video capture with manual video controls, stereo audio recording, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC and smartphone remote control app.

The PowerShot G7 X is well positioned to contend with Sony’s popular RX100 III. It brings a longer lens and flip-up touchscreen LCD.

The styling and size of the G7 X make it look like an S series, but the degree of direct control justifies its G-series designation.

The camera offers a dedicated exposure compensation dial and clicking control dial around the lens for greater direct creative adjustments.

The flip-up articulating LCD screen also makes it easy to take high quality selfies.

The Canon PowerShot SX60 HS camera features a 65x Optical Zoom lens equivalent to 21mm-1,365mm, and is scheduled to ship in October at $549.

Among the key features are Canon’s Face Detection and Tracking AF system, 6.4 fps full-resolution continuous shooting (when not utilizing Tracking AF), a new EOS-style grip design, a three-inch 922,000-dot vari-angle LCD screen for low-or high-angle shooting, and a high-resolution electronic viewfinder.

When shooting at extreme telephoto focal lengths, a zoom framing assist function remembers the previous zoom position, zooms out to locate the subject, and zooms back in to the saved position when the button is released.

Once set, the PowerShot SX60 HS camera will zoom in automatically to maintain the desired composition even if the subject moves closer or further from the camera.

A new Zoom Memory makes it possible to quickly return to the most recently used zoom position, even if the battery or memory card is replaced.

The PowerShot N2 camera has a compact and different square-shaped styling design with a selfy-friendly, flip-up LCD touchscreen. It will be available in December in a choice of black and white body colors at $299.

Key features include an 8x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 28-224mm; a 16.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor; and DIGIC 6 image processor.

Also included are enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities to easily share images anywhere. With the press of a button, the camera connects to a smartphone to upload images to the Cloud via Canon’s iMage Gateway for sharing on social platforms. It also includes NFC to easily connect with Android smart devices.

The camera also packs a 2.8-inch, 180-degree tilt, capacitive LCD touchscreen and, a new Self Portrait mode. A new shutter ring on the PowerShot N2 camera now functions with an all-round release, to expand flexibility of holding the camera in various positions.

The camera packs a variety of shooting modes, including Creative Shot mode enhanced with added filters: Retro, Monochrome, Special or Natural.

An advanced movie-shooting feature in Creative Shot mode combines several movie clips automatically with special effects, including super slow motion, quick motion and various filters, for short film creation.

A Smart Auto Mode with 58 different predefined scenes for still shots and 21 for video is also added.
