As CES Asia Gets Underway, Mercedes-Benz Unveils ‘Fit & Healthy’ Concept Car

A growing CES Asia 2017 opened today in Shanghai for its third iteration with an emphasis on connectivity and tech innovation geared to the Asian marketplace.

According to Consumer Technology Association (CTA) president/CEO Gary Shapiro, the show brought in more than 450 exhibitors from 22 countries, regions and territories to launch products for the Asian market.  “The show is buzzing with the ground-breaking technologies representing the full expanse of the industry,” said Shapiro. “We’ve brought together leaders from nearly every facet of consumer tech from global brands to startups. CES Asia is home to the next generation of technology that is changing the world for the better.”

Kicking things off was Mercedes-Benz, whose press conference on the eve of the show featured its new AMG GT concept car which incorporates principles of Chinese health and wellness into its feature set. The car, based on the Mercedes’ S-class luxury sedan, is “designed to help improve the well-being of the driver and passengers,” Goetz Renner, head of the Fit & Healthy project at Mercedes-Benz, said during the launch event.

Working with the company’s Mercedes ME smartphone app, the concept car can collect data and movements of the driver, including heartbeat rate, and provide nutrition and fitness information based on the driver’s personal condition, Renner said. Designers also added a robust air purifier system that filters out pollution – and added a system for making tea in the back seat. “This is specially designed for Chinese consumers,” he noted.

Another feature of the concept car is that all four seats are equipped to give massages to the driver and passengers. Together, these functions can wake up or relax the driver depending on the specific conditions.

This year’s show includes several new special events and exhibits including four new featured product categories: augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), drones, and the Internet of Things (IoT); an expanded self-driving experience, with BMW, Continental and Baidu showcasing the future of vehicle tech and allowing attendees to experience the technology first hand; the first CES Asia Innovation Awards; and the Startup Park Stage, a new dedicated stage showcasing a flash pitch competition by Johnson & Johnson and presentations from startup group organizers La French Tech, Shenzhen Valley Ventures and ZJ Park, among others.

This year’s CES Asia has expanded into a fifth exhibit hall with more than 40,000 gross square meters of exhibition space, CTA said.
