Compared to the three-month period ending in
January, the percentage of smartphone subscribers using any brand of
Android-based phone rose in the latest period to 36.4 percent from 31.2
percent. Although Apple's share also rose to 26 percent from 24.7 percent, the
gap between the number two OS and market-share leader Android grew to 10.4
percentage points from 6.5 percentage points. (See table.)
The shares held by the BlackBerry, Microsoft and WebOS systems all fell, with the BlackBerry OS posted the greatest loss of 4.7 percentage points.
The survey of more than 30,000 subscribers ages 13 and up also found that:
--Samsung maintained its top market-share lead among all cellphone users.
--And the percentage of all phone subscribers who text, browse the web, download apps, play games and access social networks or blog on their phones continued to rise.
In brand share, Samsung maintained its top spot despite losing almost half a percentage point in share. LG maintained its number two share, gaining a meager 0.1 percent share gain. Motorola held at number three but lost almost a full percentage point in share, and Apple moved up to fourth place, thanks to a gain of 1.3 percentage points. RIM dropped to fifth place from fourth.
