Buena Park, Calif. — Yamaha is bringing network connectivity to two-channel receivers for the first time.

The R-N500 network stereo receiver will be available at retail late this month at a suggested $599.

At the price, the stereo receiver offers Apple AirPlay to stream music from an Apple mobile device or iTunes-equipped computer, access to thousands of Internet radio stations via vTuner, Pandora streaming, Spotify Connect functionality, and DLNA 1.5 to stream music from DLNA-enabled computers and network-attaches storage drives. The receiver also features a Made For iPod/iPhone/iPad USB port that also plays music from mass-storage devices.

The R-N500 connects to the network via an Ethernet port or via a $99 Wi-Fi adapter. The receiver also connects to a $69 Bluetooth receiver.

The receiver can be controlled from smartphones and tablets running Yamaha’s Network Player Controller app.

Supported codecs include MP3, WMA, AAC, MPEG-4, and FLAC and WAV files up to 192kHz/24 bits.

The amplifier section is rated at 2x80 watts RMS with 0.4 percent THD. It also comes with moving-magnet phono stage, subwoofer output, and coaxial and optical inputs.

Other features include a Pure Direct switch, which shortens the audio-signal path to improve sound quality while maintaining full output capacity. The switch bypasses the control circuits for bass and treble, balance and the back buffer amp. A continuously variable loudness control lets users control the balance of low- and high-frequency sounds to compensate for reduced perception of high and low frequencies at lower volume levels.
