Sherwood Adds AirPlay, Wi-Fi Direct To AVRs

9/06/2012 10:42:57 AM Eastern

Indianapolis – Sherwood came to the CEDIA Expo with its first active soundbar and two new A/V receivers, one of which is the company’s first with Apple AirPlay.

The other receiver is the company’s first with Wi-Fi Direct and built-in Wi-Fi.

Both receivers are the company’s first with front-height-channel post-processing technology. They use Dolby’s Pro Logic IIz front-height technology.

The AVR with Wi-Fi Direct is the $449-suggested R-807, due in January. The networked 7.1-channel receiver features built-in Internet radio, and its DLNA technology enables music streaming from networked PCs. It reduces the opening price point for Sherwood’s networked AVRs from $599.

Other R-807 features include two-zone audio, front USB, MP3 and WMA audio decoding, 1080p video scaling, five HDMI 1.4a inputs with 4K passthrough, one HDMI 1.4a output with audio return channel, optional iPod/iPhone dock for audio and video playback, and 7x100-watt amplifier rated at 0.08 percent THD into 6 ohms from 20Hz to 20kHz.

At a suggested $999, the R-977 AV receiver lacks Wi-Fi Direct and is bundled with a Wi-Fi USB stick. It adds Apple AirPlay, phono input, three-zone audio, and USB input that is Made for iPod, iPhone and iPad. It also adds six HDMI 1.4a inputs and dual HDMI 1.4a outputs with audio return channel.

The networked 7.2-channel receiver, shipping in November, is compatible with the Windows 7 Play To feature.

Other features include Dolby Pro Logic IIz front-height-channel post processing, DLNA, Internet radio and 7x125-watt amplification. The active soundbar is the $399-suggested S-9 with built-in AM/FM tuner, three-way speaker pair, 2x50-watt amp, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround processing, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Opsodis virtual-surround technology, which also delivers a 5.1 effect from two-channel content. It also features 3x1 HDMI repeater, two S/PDIF digital inputs, aux input and front USB.

President Gary Graning also said the company plans its second tabletop docking speaker by year’s end. It will be a step up to the current $299-suggested DS-N30, which just shipped. The DS-N30 features Apple AirPlay, DLNA networking, embedded iPhone/iPod dock, built-in Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, and multiple audio decoders, including AAC, MP3, WMA, OGG and FLAC. Details of the step-up model were unavailable.

The company no longer offers a separate Newcastle series of AVRs targeted to A/V specialists and installers.
