Sony Reveals Pricing For A7II Mirrorless ILC

San Diego — Sony officially announced Wednesday North American marketing plans for the recently announced full-frame A7II mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera supporting five-axis image stabilization.

Sony said the A7II will be available starting Dec. 9 at a $1,700 suggested retail for the body only, or as a kit with the FE 28-70mm F3.5 – F5.6 OSS zoom lens (model SEL2870) for about $2,000.

The Sony A7II offers 4.5 stops of stabilizing power that can be applied to each axis independently. The system is based on the CIPA standard.

The camera can also detect an e-mount lens with built-in OSS to use a combination of in-lens and in-body stabilization for the best and steadiest results.

Other new features include a 30 percent faster AF speed and 1.5-times improvement in tracking moving subjects through processing enhancements.

The camera uses the same 24-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor as the predecessor.

In video, the camera now includes support for the XAVC S codec with 1080/50Mbps high-data-rate recording with advanced compression and S-Log2 gamma function, which preserves a wide dynamic range. It also includes Time Code (useful for editing), Rec Control (for synced recording with external recorder) and dual-video recording.

The A7II also adds picture profiles for convenient in-camera tone adjustments.

Cosmetic/ergonomic changes include a larger grip and a new front dial. The shutter-release button was moved on the grip for more natural operation, and the front-panel composition was changed to magnesium alloy from plastic.

The camera also boasts about a 40 percent faster start-up time compared with the previous A7 model.

The A7II camera is Wi-Fi and NFC compatible and fully functional with Sony’s PlayMemories application for Android and iOS platforms.

Sony also announced three new A-mount lenses: the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G SSM II, a telephoto zoom boasting improved AF performance which will carry an $1,150 suggested retail when it ships in February; the Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSMII; and the Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSMII lenses. The latter two lenses will ship this spring at prices to be announced later and will include improved AF tracking speed, reduced flare and ghosting, and will incorporate a dust- and moisture-resistant design.
