PlayStation TV To Launch Oct. 14

Foster City, Calif. – Sony Computer Entertainment revealed through a tweet Friday that its recently announced PlayStation TV system will launch in the North America Oct. 14.

The sleek, compact console will connect to TVs, like a Roku or Fire TV box, to offer a library of streaming or downloaded PlayStation games.

The company first announced the tiny set-top device at E3 in June, adding that it would be available in the U.S. and Canada at a $99 suggested retail.

The device will be able to connect with Sony’s latest PlayStation 4 console to allow playing PS4 games remotely on a secondary TV in the home, and will let users play older PS3 titles via the PlayStation Now service.

The system will also support most PlayStation Vita titles and “classics” originally developed for PlayStation and PS2 generation consoles.

It also offers Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11n connectivity, and it comes with HDMI, Ethernet, USB ports and Sony’s proprietary Vita memory card slot. Both DualShock 3 and 4 PlayStation controllers are also supported by the device.

Like the Roku and Fire TV devices, the PlayStation TV will also provide streaming movies and TV shows via the PlayStation Store and Video Unlimited service, among others, and will accept other media apps going forward.

Sony also announced at International CES in January that it plans to offer a new over-the-top pay-TV service that will be accessible by its connected PlayStation family of devices.
