Walmart 1st To Carry Smart Car Seat

Bentonville, Ark. — Walmart will begin carrying what’s being heralded as the first smart car seat.

The Evenflo Advanced SensorSafe Embrace DLX car seat is designed to prevent children being left in hot cars. It features a built-in sensor in the chest clip that communicates via RF with a dongle plugged into the car’s OBD port. A high-pitched chime will sound if the ignition is turned off and the clip isn’t unbuckled. It will also sound if the child unbuckles the clip while the car is in motion.

Multiple seats can be paired with the same dongle, but they can be used only with 2008 and later cars. The battery is expected to last the life of the seat, but additional batteries can ordered if it does not. A low-battery alert will sound when it nears end of life.

Walmart is the exclusive retailer at this time for the Advanced SensorSafe Embrace DLX, which it has priced at $149.

Voxx announced at CES in January it would launch a Baby On Board alerting system that employs a pressure sensor and Bluetooth dongle to remind parents of the babies in the backseat. It is not yet available.
