iOn Cameras & Contour Merge To Take On GoPro

Moorestown, N.J. — Point-of-view camera manufacturers iOn Cameras and Contour plan to merge.

The merger will pair Contour’s patents and international brand with iOn’s engineering, manufacturing and North American retail distribution, the companies said. The two brands will co-exist, with Contour continuing to focus on products for the higher end of the camera market, the companies added.

Giovanni Tomaselli, iOn’s CEO and founder, will serve as the new company’s CEO, while James Harrison, Contour’s CEO, will serve as president.

The new organization will reportedly invest in hardware as well as software solutions for shooting, editing, sharing, live streaming and storing content in the Cloud. Products will include home security, dash cams, tactical and police cameras, wearable cameras, action/adventure cameras, and pro production cameras.

Both brands face stiff competition from market leader GoPro, which accounts for more than 60 percent of total camcorder sales and upward of 80 percent of the action camera market, according to The NPD Group. TWICE spoke with Tomaselli last year about iOn’s retail and marketing plans.
