Cobra Expands Into Action Cams With Waspcam Purchase

Cobra Electronics is entering the action/sports-camera market with the acquisition of Waspcam.

Waspcam is a division of 636 Distributing, an Ontario-based supplier of automotive and power sports products.

The acquisition will expand Cobra’s portfolio of consumer electronics products, which include radar detectors, CB radios, dash cams, portable power and VHF radios. Cobra targets its products to driving, boating and outdoor enthusiasts, including professionals and amateurs.

The acquisition will also give Waspcam access “to the engineering, supply chain and channel resources necessary to become a dominant force in this market and a household name among outdoor enthusiasts,” said Waspcam founder Justin Moore.

With the transaction, Cobra acquired all of Waspcam, including branding, products and employees, a Cobra spokesperson said. As part of the ownership change, “the Waspcam brand and website will operate as the D-to-C product-offering channel,” the spokesperson said.  Waspcam products will also continue to be available to Waspcam’s existing distributors and retailers, which include auto parts stores, powersports stores, bike shops, marine retailers, and online outlets.

On the Waspcam.com website, the $199 Waspcam 9905 will be available along with new models in the coming months and with accessories such as mounts and wrist-worn remote controllers.

Separately, Cobra-branded action cams, such as the new $99 AdventureHD, will be sold through Cobra’s distribution channels, including Cobra.com, and expanded to new channels in the action cam and powersports markets, the spokesperson said. The AdventureHD becomes available around June 1.

Customers “can anticipate rapid and insightful innovation from us in the action-sports camera category as we continue to support our customers’ bold and aggressive lifestyles,” said Sally Washlow, CEO of Cobra owner Cedar Electronics. Cedar purchased Cobra and Escort in recent years and in 2015 merged the two companies. Cedar also markets Escort and Beltronics radar detectors.

Waspcam most recently offered three action/sports cameras, a dash cam, and related accessories such wrist-worn remote controllers and waterproof housings, the brand’s website shows.
