Mass. - Bowers & Wilkins is marching to Atlanta to expand its CM line of
freestanding speakers with a slightly smaller, less expensive version of the
line's flagship $1,500-each CM9.
The newcomer is the slim $1,100-each CM8 three-way mid-tower, which will
be displayed at the CEDIA Expo for fall shipment. It's targeted to
space-constrained consumers with performance "so very close to the much-admired
CM9," said sales and marketing VP Doug Henderson.
He described the tower as an "exceedingly elegant" model "calculated to
appeal to today's buyers" and deliver "exceptional musicality and impressive
extension." The new model was requested by dealers and consumers, he said.
Like other CM series models, the CM8 is intended for "the most critical
music lover but is equally at home in a high-achieving/high-value home-theater
suite," the company added.
The new model features the same 1-inch aluminum-dome tweeter used in the
rest of the CM speakers, and like those other speakers, the tweeter operates in
a proprietary Nautilus tapered-tube enclosure, which the company said delivers
"extended, ultra-low-coloration treble."
The new model uses a 5-inch version of the series's woven-Kevlar FST
midrange unit, said to be "capable of extraordinary dynamic feats and
class-leading low distortion." Dual 5-inch low-frequency drivers operate in a
vented enclosure with proprietary Flowport anti-coloration technology to extend
bass response to 43Hz at -6dB while maintaining quick transient response, the
