Walmart’s Vudu Service Converts DVDs/Blu-rays To Digital Via Smartphone App

Vudu, the video-streaming service owned by Walmart, now provides DVD and Blu-ray disc owners access to digital versions of their titles via their smartphones.

To use the new Mobile Disc-to-Digital feature, customers need only scan the barcode of the disc case using the newly updated Vudu mobile app. Once scanned, users can chose standard or high definition versions.

The cost of the service is $2 per title (the first conversion is free), and upgrading an SD title to HD is $5. More than one title can be scanned at a time, and movies are viewable on Vudu-enabled devices only. An UltraViolet account is also required.

Customers are only permitted to scan titles in their homes or at their Vudu billing address. Activity is monitored using a GPS locator, which customers give permission to use when they sign up for Vudu, a Walmart spokeswoman told TWICE.

There is a 100-disc conversion limit per account, per year with Mobile Disc-to-Digital. Consumers who wish to convert more are advised to use the Vudu To Go app on a computer.

The service is available for nearly 8,000 films from Lionsgate, Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Walmart said additional titles will be added in the coming months.
