HD Radio Picks Up More Automaker Support

Columbia, Md. — Consumers will be turning on HD Radio in more OEM sound systems from more automakers in the coming year, based on introductions at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, said HD Radio developer iBiquity Digital.

At the show, which runs from Jan. 14-27, Chevrolet, Kia and Lexus unveiled new vehicles that include HD Radio, and Jeep and Infiniti introduced their first vehicles with HD Radio. In addition, Kia made HD Radio standard on the Cadenza, and Lexus became the first automaker to introduce subscription-free traffic and weather data services via the digital FM broadcast, iBiquity said.

 With the announcements, a total of 31 automotive brands have unveiled plans to incorporate HD Radio in more than 160 vehicle models by the end of the year, with more than 80 models featuring HD Radio receivers as standard equipment, iBiquity said.

 Here’s what the various automakers announced:

Chevrolet:The all-new 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray will offer HD Radio.

Infiniti: The all-new Q50 will be the first Infiniti vehicle to launch HD Radio as a standard feature.

Jeep: The Grand Cherokee will be the first Jeep to offer HD Radio.

Kia: The all-new 2014 Cadenza will be the first Kia with HD Radio as standard. Kia also displayed the 2014 Forte sedan with HD Radio.

 Lexus: The all-new 2014 IS is the first vehicle with HD Radio audio and subscription-free traffic and weather services as a standard feature.

More than 2,150 radio stations are broadcasting HD Radio signals, and many of those stations are broadcasting up to three digital programs simultaneously, creating another 1,400 stations that can be heard only via an HD Radio tuner.
