Onkyo Adds Spotify Connect, New iOS Remote App

Upper Saddle River, N.J. – Onkyo released a free firmware update that adds Spotify Connect streaming service to the brand’s 2014-model networked A/V receivers, preamp processors, and HTiB receiver/speaker packages.

Separately, the company released a free iOS 8-compatible app to turn the iPod touch or iPhone into a remote that controls playback and adjusts settings for A/V receivers and preamp processors launched in 2011 and later. The Onkyo Remote 3 app also controls the TX-8050 networked stereo receiver and CS-N755 networked hi-fi mini system.

The Spotify Connect update lets consumers use Spotify’s own streaming app on their phone or tablet to control the Onkyo products’ Spotify Premium service, which is embedded in the products. Because consumers don’t have to stream Spotify to the Onkyo components from the app itself via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, users can make cellphone calls or use other cellphone apps without interrupting Spotify playback. In addition, users who are listening to Spotify as they enter the house can also transfer playback to the Onkyo components without interrupting playback.

“Users can use all the features and functionality found on the Spotify app to enjoy their music,” said national marketing manager Paul Wasek.

For its part, the Remote App 3 features a new “flat” design that provides improved stability for navigation, Wasek said. It also allows for faster connection and switching with Onkyo receivers and components, and its adds compatibility with Spotify Connect. Plus, it works with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Other features include ability to stream music stored on an iPod touch/iPhone to a receiver or other Onkyo components. Users can also choose iPod/Phone songs by album, artist, playlist, and genre.

The app also selects the Onkyo components’ online streaming services, and it finds and streams high-resolution PCM and 2.8MHz DSD files (for models made in 2013 and later), and 5.6MHz DSD files (for 2014 models), stored on compatible networked computers and NAS drives.

The app also finds and streams lossless and compressed audio from DLNA-compatible media servers and PCs. And the app manages playback in up to three zones from an Onkyo multizone audio component.

Other features include input source switching, limited control of other Onkyo A/V and hi-fi components connected to a receiver via Onkyo’s RI (Remote Interactive) terminal, and playback control of compatible Blu-ray players via CEC.

The app also accesses the main setup menu on compatible Onkyo A/V receivers so users can make detailed adjustment via a connected display.
