HD Radio Cites OEM Gains

Columbia, Md. — Honda and Dodge have become the latest car brands to offer HD Radio, bringing the digital radio technology to 33 vehicle brands in 170 car models, HD Radio developer iBiquity Digital announced.

A total of 80 car models offer HD Radio as standard equipment. More than 3.4 million HD Radio-equipped cars were sold in 2012, and 20 percent of all new cars sold in 2012 included HD Radio, iBiquity added.

Not only did Honda and Dodge announce their first vehicles with HD Radio, but Cadillac, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Mitsubishi and Toyota announced new or refreshed vehicles with the technology, iBiquity said.

Honda said its all-new 2014 Odyssey will feature HD Radio, and Dodge announced the refreshed 2014 Durango SUV would be its first vehicle with the technology.

In addition:

--Cadillac said the new 2014 CTS would come with the company’s CUE infotainment system and HD Radio as standard.

-- Hyundai refreshed its Equus Luxury Sedan, which includes HD Radio as standard.
-- Jeep unveiled a new Cherokee, which will be the second Jeep vehicle with HD Radio.

--Toyota launched an all-new 2014 Highlander with HD Radio. The Highlander will also be among the first Toyota vehicles to use HD Radio to stream traffic and weather data.

--Kia said its refreshed 2014 Optima, Forte and Soul models all offer HD Radio.

--Mitsubishi reiterated that its 2014 Outlander will be its first vehicle with HD Radio for audio, traffic and weather services.

In other updates, iBiquity said more than 450 FM stations support HD Radio’s Artist Experience feature on almost 850 digital channels. The feature is available on HD Radio car receivers from BMW, Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Lexus, Toyota and Volkswagen and from aftermarket suppliers Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony, and on a product from Insignia. Artist Experience enables stations to broadcast album cover art and station or advertiser logos.

iBiquity also said the selection of radios with HD Digital Traffic Services is growing. The services enable stations to transmit traffic, weather and other information for plotting onto car navigation screens. Two national networks, built by Clear Channel and the Broadcaster Traffic Consortium, deliver such information over 600 radio stations across the country for pickup by JVC and Garmin consumer products.

In addition, Toyota, Lexus and Mitsubishi will bring cars to market this year with these features built-in, iBiquity said.

 To date, 2,200 stations have converted to HD Radio, and 1,450 additional HD2, HD3 and HD4 multicast channels are now on air, iBiquity said. Ninety percent of the population can receive a digital radio signal, the company added.
