Philips Adds USB To Systems

LAS VEGAS— Philips went to CES with an expanded selection of USB-equipped two-channel shelf systems. All four of its minisystems and four of eight microsystems will do double duty as high-performance PC speakers. In the 2003 line, only one shelf system, a micro, offered USB. The company is also adding MP3/WMA playback to all four minis and to six of its eight micros. Each of these models will display ID3 tags. The opening-price micro with USB and MP3/WMA playback is the five-disc MCM-530 at a suggested $149. Compared to elevator-style changers, the 530's five independent CD drawers make it possible for users to change discs while one continues to play.

Polaroid's Audio Focus

LAS VEGAS— Digital Media Group of Boston expanded its Polaroid line of MP3 music portables at CES to include models incorporating 1-inch and 1.8-inch hard disk drives (HDDs). An existing 2.5-inch HDD model in 20GB, 30GB and 40GB versions includes built-in MP3 encoder and decoder, playback of WMA files protected by WMA's digital-rights-management (DRM) technology, FM tuner and voice recorder. Additional details were unavailable.

Linksys Links PC, Stereo

LAS VEGAS— Linksys announced plans at CES for first-quarter availability of its Wireless-B Media Link, which uses 802.11b or an Ethernet network to stream MP3 and WMA music files and Internet radio stations from a PC. It will come with LCD display and IR remote. In a progressive-scan DVD player, Linksys is incorporating wireless-A/V networking via the 802.11g standard. The player will stream audio and video files stored on a networked PC's hard drive. The files include MP3 and WMA music files and video files in the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and DivX formats. It'll also access digital images in five formats and stream Internet radio stations via the PC.Additional details and pricing weren't available on either product.
