The new smartphones include the Motorola Atrix 2 and Samsung Captivate Glide, both joining AT&T's premium Android smartphone lineup. Both feature the 21Mbps version of AT&T's 4G HSPA+ wireless technology, as does the Pantech Pocket. The two 3G phones are the Samsung DoubleTime and the ZTE-made AT&T Avail, which will be the second Android phone for AT&T's GoPhone prepaid service.
For now, AT&T has disclosed the price and availability date only of the Atrix 2, which will be available in direct and indirect channels Oct. 16 at $99.99 without rebate.
The Atrix 2, like the original Atrix launched earlier this year at $199, features a dual-core 1GHz processor, 4G HSPA+, and 2.1GHz-band HSPA+ operation in foreign markets, but the new model adds 1080p video capture versus 720p, slightly larger qHD screen at 4.3 inches vs. 4 inches, and Android 2.3 OS compared to the 2.2 OS featured in the original Atrix at its launch.
Other Atrix 2 features include mobile Wi-Fi hot spot, 8-megapixel rear camera, front-facing camera, HDMI output with HDMI mirror mode, 8GB embedded memory, 2GB MicroSD card, expandable 32GB MicroSD slot, and such enterprise-ready features as device and memory-card encryption, enterprise-grade VPN, enhanced Exchange options and remote wipe.
Like the original Atrix, the Atrix 2 connects to an optional Lap Dock 100, which takes the shape of a laptop PC and enables full web browsing through a Firefox browser and ability to use the dock's keyboard and mouse to control phone apps and enter data.
Another new 4G Android phone, the Samsung Captivate Glide, features a thin slide-from-the-side QWERTY keyboard, Nvidia Tegra 2 1GHz dual-core processor, Android 2.3, 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen, 8-megapixel flash camera with 1080p video capture, front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera for video chat, 2.1GHz-band HSPA+ operation in foreign markets, 1GB embedded memory, included 8GB MicroSD card, expandable 32GB MicroSD slot, and Exchange ActiveSync support for IT policies, task synchronization and global address lookup. Other enterprise features include device and SD card encryption, VPN support and mobile device management.
