Seattle - Amazon.com plans summer availability of a free Android smartphone app that will enable consumers to download and read e-books available on the company's online Kindle Store.

Earlier this year, Amazon launched a Kindle app for seven BlackBerry smartphones. Amazon also offers free Kindle apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Macs and PCs.

The free apps save and synchronize a user's bookmarks across multiple devices, including a user's Kindle, Kindle DX, and Kindle-equipped iPad and smartphones. Using the apps, consumers search for and download via cellular or Wi-Fi any of the Kindle store's more than 540,000 books plus tens of thousands free classics. The apps also let users browse by genre or author and read customer reviews, personalized recommendations and editorial reviews. Consumers can choose from five different font sizes, begin reading books for free before they buy, read in portrait or landscape mode, and tap on either side of the screen or flick to turn pages.
