Recordable DVD Council Supports DVD Multi Spec

The Recordable DVD Council (RDVDC) extended its support for a new rewritable DVD specification called DVD Multi and reported it expects recordable DVD sales to explode this year.

DVD Multi, first introduced at Comdex by the DVD Forum, can burn most of the rewritable DVD formats including, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW and CD-RW. Hitachi-LG Data Storage is expected to start shipping the first DVD Multi capable drive this month.

On the consumer adoption front, the RVDDC cited data from Jon Peddie Research that projects unit sales to grow to 9.8 million in 2002, up from 1.3 million last year, and hit the 50 million mark by 2005. This growth is to be driven by declining hardware and media prices, said Jon Peddie, founder of the research firm. He said the average prices for DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW will be less than $400 by the end of the year and a DVD-R disc should cost less than $3.

The RDVDC announced that it has added 15 new members in the past three months, including Pinnacle Software, bringing the total membership to 84.
