CEA Establishes Health & Fitness Tech Division

ARLINGTON, VA. — The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has formed a new health and fitness technology division in response to the growing role CE devices are playing in improving health and fitness.

The division originated as the health and fitness technology working group in 2010, and the category has accounted for a steadily growing presence at each subsequent International CES.

At this year’s CES in January, digital health technology had its largest dedicated footprint ever, increasing by 40 percent, as did the digital fitness presence, which increased by 30 percent.

Also at CES, CEA, in conjunction with Parks Associates, released a report, “The Connected Health and Wellness Market,” which forecast a 142 percent increase over the next five years in personal health and wellness product sales as well as software and service revenues.

Another CEA report, “Understanding the Market for Wearable Health and Fitness Devices,” showed consumer interest in purchasing dedicated wearable fitness devices specifically in the next 12 months, quadrupled in 2013, making it the largest year-over-year increase for any category of fitness device.

“Technology innovations now offer unprecedented opportunities for consumers to take control of their health and engage in their personal fitness,” said Gary Shapiro, CEA president and CEO. “Under CEA’s leadership, the health and fitness division brings together a group of proven leaders in the space to further raise awareness that these products can help us change our lives for the better.”

Newly named division chairman Woody Scal, chief revenue officer at Fitbit, said, “New technologies are playing a key role, transforming health care and empowering people to reach their fitness goals as never before. I’m excited to help establish a truly impressive board to help move that transformation forward.”

The inaugural board of the division includes Scal, LG’s Tim Alessi, Sony’s Kirk Dulaney, Valencell’s Chris Eschbach, Humetrix’s Dr. Bettina Experton, Under Armour’s Christy Hedgpeth, Verizon’s Nitesh Jain, MC10’s Isaiah Kacyvenski, AT&T’s Craig Kaiser, Qualcomm Life’s Dr. James Mault, Jawbone’s Andrew Rosenthal, Samsung’s Casey Ryan, Google’s Johana Shelton, Fitbug’s Jon Shimp, Linear’s Jeff Sweeney, Ingram Micro’s Robert Terkelsen, GreatCall’s Krijn Van der Raadt, Misfit Wearables CEO Sonny Vu, and Neurosky CEO Stanly Yang.

Board meetings are open to all CEA members, and the next one will be held May 20 at 2 p.m. EDT. To learn more, contact Kinsey Fabrizio at [email protected].
