Research Triangle Park, N.C. — Lenovo introduced Tuesday a pair of affordably priced consumer-focused Chromebooks offering two usage form factors.
The N20 (starting at a $279 suggested retail) standard and N20p ($329) Hero Chromebooks will begin shipping in July and August, respectively, and are both billed as thin, lightweight models with a set of comprehensive app-based technologies.
As the company’s first consumer-targeted Chromebooks, the models are optimized for a host of A/V entertainment usage options, in addition to education-market-required tasks like word processing, texting, email, etc.
The N20 offers a familiar clamshell laptop design, while the N20p Chromebook offers a multimode design with a 300-degree hinged screen that allows usage configurations of laptop and stand modes.
The multimode N20p Chromebook also offers a 10-finger touchscreen for playing games and browsing.
The new additions join Lenovo’s Chromebook lineup, which includes the ThinkPad 11e Chromebook and the ThinkPad Yoga 11e Chromebook series, targeted toward education customers.
Both new Chromebooks measure less than 0.7 inch and weigh less than 3 pounds.
They include an 11.6-inch 1,366 by 768 HD screen, a full-sized keyboard with oversized trackpad and cool-touch palm rest.
Both models offer up to eight hours of battery life and are powered by an Intel Celeron processor with integrated graphics.
Connectivity includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.
The Chromebooks also come with up to 16GB of internal memory and up to 100GB of free Cloud storage from Google Drive for storing digital content.
Lenovo said the Chrome operating system allows the Chromebooks “to boot within seconds.”
It is automatically updated and has access to tens of thousands of apps available via the Chrome Web Store.
Lenovo said users can work on the new Chromebooks offline, writing email on Gmail and creating documents with Google Docs.
The Chromebooks also allow for opening, editing and sharing Microsoft Word and Excel document files. Users can share their Chromebook with someone else through a guest’s personal Google account or by enabling Guest Mode, and they can enable monitoring of children’s web browsing with supervised user profiles.
The Chromebooks will enable printing anywhere via Google Cloud Print, as well as remote desktop access to access software on their machine.
