  • The Cable Set Top Box Market: After a Record Year in 2008, Slightly Lower Demand in 2009
After a record-setting year in 2008, demand for digital cable set top boxes is leveling off in 2009. Last year, there were just over 46.6 million digital cable set top box unit shipments. Due to cable TV operator spending reductions, in 2009, we are forecasting worldwide unit shipments to decrease by 6%, to just over 44 million. This report covers the market for cable TV set top boxes, with special emphasis on product manufacturers, market and technology trends, and the semiconductor content of the boxes. It also provides a digital cable set top box Bill of Materials forecast, digital cable set top box manufacturer market shares for 2008, and updates worldwide unit shipment and revenue forecasts through 2013. • Worldwide Smartphones
The worldwide smartphone industry is one of the few that has successfully weathered the current recession; in fact, smartphones actually seem to be recession-proof. But while the number of smartphones continues to grow, so does the number of smartphone OSs, so much so, that 2010 looks like it will be a pivotal year for the survival of smartphone OSs. This report looks at smartphone trends, including operating systems, hardware content, and consumer preferences, and backs up these trends with a smartphone forecast, regional forecast, a forecast for each major smartphone OS, and forecasts for smartphones with GPS, picoprojectors, accelerometers, image sensors, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Also included are survey results on what features users want in their smartphones, and a bill-of-materials for a typical smartphone.
  • Home Network Technology & Connectivity Use: Ethernet, 802.11, Coax, and Powerline
Based upon the results of our North American broadband survey, the majority of consumers with a home network that use Wi-Fi are still not very/not at all familiar with the benefits and differences between 802.11g and 802.11n. Although this may limit upgrades in the short term, the older Wi-Fi standards will be discontinued eventually anyway. Other wired technologies that use coax, phone wiring, and powerline are also beginning to make strides with telcos deploying telco TV services. The number of home LAN physical layer interface shipments will surpass 500 million in 2010, and the installed base of home networks will surpass 300 million in 2011. Global and regional forecasts are provided for home networks, with North America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific broken down by use of Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, and other wired solutions. In addition, global home network interfaces by physical layer are included, since the majority of network-enabled devices have both wired and wireless connectivity options. More Info

  • Worldwide PMP/MP3 Player Shipments Plateau as Market Succumbs to Competition From Emerging Connected Device Segments
Not so long ago, the PMP/MP3 player market was one of the fastest-growing segments in the portable consumer electronic (CE) industry, with Apple as the runaway leader with its successful iPod lineup. Today, the market is facing a serious slowdown as Apple shifts its focus to its illustrious iPhone, and as iPhone-like competitors pop up. PMP/MP3 player shipments will reach 225 million worldwide by the end of 2009, up only 5% from 2008. Manufacturers are scrambling to encourage sales by adding enhanced features, like touchscreens and support for Wi-Fi. Nevertheless, the PMP/MP3 player market has reached saturation due to waning consumer demand, a poor economic environment, and competition from emerging Internet-connected CE segments, such as audio/video-capable smartphones and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). In-Stat's latest research on the global PMP/MP3 player market includes forecasts for unit shipments and revenues out to 2013. Regional splits for unit shipments, as well as expectations for growth in Wi-Fi enabled PMPs, are included. New to this research is a bill of materials analysis and the total silicon revenue opportunity for suppliers to the global PMP market. More Info
