Ottawa, Ontario — Graphics software vendor Corel purchased Minneapolis-based Jasc Software, makers of the Paint Shop family of digital imaging software. According to a fact sheet distributed by the companies, Jasc's Paint Shop product line will continue in the market and the two companies will merge distribution into Corel's dealer network. According to a Jasc spokesperson, Jasc-branded software will remain on store shelves until March or April of next year when the branding will be changed to Corel Paint Shop to reflect the new ownership. Jasc employees will be retained and continue to develop the Paint Shop software family in their Minneapolis office.
Amesbury, Mass. — Magpix announced that it will ship its Pocket Photo Album to dealers this month. The portable viewer features a 1.5-inch TFT LCD screen; a video output for connecting to a TV; 16MB of internal memory with an SD/MMC expansion slot; and the ability to zoom, scroll, view thumbnails and initiate slideshows of digital images. The 2.2-ounce device is available in two colors, titanium silver and pink thistle, for a suggested $99.
Melville, N.Y. — Olympus announced pricing on its previously announced Evolt E-300 digital SLR, bringing the model, with lens, in at a suggested retail price of $1399. The company expects the estimated street price of the E-300 to be $999.99. It will ship this month.
New York — Some 22,000 visitors and 235 exhibitors officially attended the PhotoPlus Expo, held here, from October 21-23, an increase of 4 percent and 17 percent over 2003's numbers, respectively. The show, run by VNU Exhibition, beat last year's attendance of 21,000 attendees and 200 exhibitors.
Mahwah, N.J. — Konica Minolta announced pricing for its 8-megapixel DiMAGE A200 camera. The unit will ship this month for an estimated street price of $799. Lexar Jumpstarts JumpDrive With New Promo
Fremont, Calif. — Beginning in the first quarter of 2005, Lexar will ship its JumpDrive USB flash drives in three colors in specially designed multipacks. Each multipack in the new Lexar promotion will include three separate drives, in light blue, orange and lime green colors with matching lanyards. Lexar will offer 64MB JumpDrive packs, for a suggested $49.99, and 128MB JumpDrive packs for a suggested $69.99.
San Jose, Calif. — SanDisk and data storage solutions vendor Kadena Systems have expanded a partnership to include Kadena's Cruzer PocketCache backup and archiving software on all of SanDisk's USB flash drives. The Cruzer Titanium drives come with a fully licensed version of Cruzer PocketCache, while Cruzer Mini and Cruzer Micro are bundled with a seven-day trial version that can be upgraded online for $20.
Fremont, Calif. — DDR memory module maker Corsair Memory will jump into the flash memory market with a line of USB drives and SD cards. The USB 2.0 drives will be dubbed Flash Voyager and feature a water resistant rubber casing with a 19MBps sustained read speed. The drives are shipping this month in capacities from 128MB to 1GB. The company's SD cards have a 40x speed rating with a 6MBps sustained read speed. They will also be offered in 128MB to 1GB capacities.
